Synopsis

Spencer Cohen is the guy who gets answers to relationship questions. Playing the role of the new lover, his job is to make his client’s ex realise one of two things: he doesn’t want to break up or he really does. Either way, his client gets answers.
The ex would either apologize and beg, or turn and walk. But in the end, Spencer’s client won. If he wanted his ex back and got him, it was great. If the guy walked away, then as hard it was for the client, he knew it was over. Regardless of the outcome, Spencer’s work was done.
Andrew Landon’s ex left him without so much as an explanation. But his sister can’t stand to see him miserable, so, much to Andrew’s dismay, they hire Spencer to be Andrew’s new boyfriend to get the ex back.
For Spencer, it is never personal. Merely a business transaction. No emotions, no strings, no complications.
Yeah right.
Even a blind man could see how this would end.

Jane’s Review

I adored this series when it first came out and so was dying to listen to the audio version. Spencer is an Aussie living in Los Angeles. He works privately for clients who want to get their ex back. He helps get definitive answers to ended relationships. He acts as a new lover and this determines if the ex is jealous and wants to get back together or if the relationship has really ended and then the client can begin to move on. Either way Spencer's clients get an answer and his work is done. He usually manages to stay entirely professional, detached and unemotional, never getting involved with his clients.

Andrew Landon has been dumped by his ex, Eli and is miserable. His sister employs Spencer’s services to help Andrew get Eli back. Whilst initially sceptical, Andrew soon warms to the idea and Spencer and Andrew spend a lot of time together and start getting to know one another better. It soon becomes apparent that they are very compatible and have a great deal in common. More so than Andrew and Eli. After posing as Andrew’s new boyfriend, Spencer realises that feelings may have entered the equation and I just loved Spencer trying to remain detached but struggling. I loved Andrew’s geeky, nerdiness and Spencer’s vulnerability. The reasons for Spencer being in LA and not in Oz are touched upon and I really felt for him. There are some really touching, emotional moments interspersed with some lighter relief. The writing is top notch and the secondary cast of characters well rendered, Spencer’s friends are particularly fab.

I was fascinated by the premise of this story and I was so fully engaged with the characters, I was rooting for them both and we leave this part of the story with a HFN. Believe me, you will want to dive straight into book 2 to see what happens with the sexy nerd and the trendy lumbersexual.

NARRATION

Joel Leslie paired with any N.R.Walker book is a match made in narration heaven. Joel slips seamlessly from an Australian accent for Spencer to an American one for Andrew. His Spanish twang is also excellent for the voices of Spencer’s friends Emilio and Daniella. What Joel Leslie does very well as a narrator is project emotion. You can feel the anticipation and the longing in Spencer and then the utter devastation and heartbreak when he thinks Andrew has gone off with his ex Eli. It is this that elevates the narration beyond some other narrator’s capabilities. It's not a long listen at only 5 hours and 26 minutes, and therefore it never becomes boring, you become fully immersed and invested in the lives of Spencer and Andrew. I will definitely be listening to the other books in the series. Book 2 is available right now.

Meet N.R. Walker

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance.
She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words. She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things... but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...
